UrBackup is an efficient Client-Server Backup system. It backup both images and files. A client for Windows lets you backup open files and complete partition images. Backups are stored to disks in an efficient way (deduplication) on either Windows or Linux servers. It supports Windows and Linux operating system.


Unison is a file-synchronization tool written in OCaml. It allows two replicas of a collection of files and directories to be stored on different hosts, modified separately, and then brought up to date by propagating the changes in each replica to the other.


Rsync is a file-transfer utility that has synchronization capabilities that make it suitable for creating backups or mirroring. It's a useful tool but is best used by advanced users. Rsync supports Linux, Windows, and OS X operating system.


Duplicity backs up directories by producing encrypted tar-format volumes and uploading them to a remote or local file server. Because Duplicity uses librsync, the incremental archives are space efficient and only record the parts of files that have changed since the last backup. Because duplicity uses GnuPG to encrypt and/or sign these archives, they will be safe from spying and/or modification by the server. Duplicity supports Linux operating system.


Disk Archive, a.k.a. DAR, is an older command-line tool for backup. DAR is a shell command that backs up directory trees and files. It works under Linux, *BSD, Solaris, MacOS X and MS-Windows. DAR can make selective and differential backups, slices (to split an heavy archive over several media like CD/DVD or Zip floppies), strong or lazy encryption, compression and, obviously, archive testing. For those who prefer a GUI, one is available through DarGUI. DAR supports Windows, Linux, and OS X operating system.

Clonezilla is a partition or disk clone tool similar to Norton Ghost®. It saves and restores only used blocks in hard drive. Two types of Clonezilla are available, Clonezilla live and Clonezilla SE (Server Edition).
